Lessons for Life

It was an important appointment. After the normal discussions and consultations, the old psychologist, who hardly gives any advise looked straight into my eyes and said:

“Not a doctor, not an engineer, we should thrive to live the life of a common farmer. Not the modern day farmers. But the traditional ones’ who have mastered the Art of Living!”

Too young to understand the vagaries of life, I couldn’t digest what he was trying to point out. Observing my helplessness, he explained.

“Boy, I have never advised you till day. Because I was studying you. Today, I feel, you are ripe enough to get into the thick of the things. Let me be point blank clear to you - life is not going to be easy. Especially for you!”  - pointing his finger to me he continued. “You are going to be tested like none others. Because your mind is an ideal one to be exploited! You will be beaten, strangled, suffocated by your life. Not entirely because of your fault though. But irrespective of all that which is bound to happen, I want you to be successful over yourself. And then, from that that day onwards, you will have nothing but peace in your life.”

“To start, you should observe the life of a farmer. A farmer works hard, toils from dawn to dusk. He lives a life which is very close to nature. He is sincere in what he do. He prays to the Nature God. He puts every effort to provide what is needed for his little farm. Yet, at the end, one fine day, he might see the Nature betray him. He might stand helpless looking at his crop crumbling down without rains. He might stand lonely in the farm watching all his crops drowning in torrential rains. Yet he never succumbs. He ensures his mind never fails. He still prays. Prays harder. He picks up his plough and starts his drill again. He might be living with pain and bruises in his heart and body. Yet, he never allows the pain to rule him. So learn by observing none other than a farmer and take these metaphorical rules from him.”
  • -          Work Hard.
  • -          Live a life which is close to Nature - we came from it and have to return back to it.
  • -          Be Sincere to what you do and to your true relations – irrespective of what you get back.
  • -          Be Strong – emotionally first, physically next.
  • -          Pray – proportional to the pain you have to endure!

"Believe me, if you follow this, you have heaven waiting for you. Both before and after death!" - he concluded.

The old doctor, passed away few years back - surely to heaven! What he prophesied came true literally. Now I see myself practising the life of a farmer. And I see the eternal peace round the corner. And the heaven too is not far away!
